NEWS & VIEWS |
On Wednesday, July 16, TWCP celebrated its 15th anniversary with some cake, some singing, and some congratulations. Over fifteen years ago a small group of dedicated individuals came together and started what we now know as The Wellness Community of Philadelphia. As is so often the case, this group had a dream to help others, and through their dedication, commitment, sweat, and determination, it became real.
What began in the basement of a mattress factory on City Line Avenue is now a full program of services throughout the city and counties surrounding Philadelphia. While Ridgeland Mansion is our main base of operation, hundreds of people are supported at The Anne McCouch Center in Lansdale, Paoli Hospital, Temple Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Grand View Hospital, and Hahnemann Hospital.
As we reflect on the thousands of hours of services provided throughout these past 15 years, the thousands of survivors and caregivers and friends who found support, the staff who gave so tirelessly, and our Board and donors who have made sure the work continues on, it's time to celebrate the past and embrace what lies ahead.
Thank you for being part of our community. Happy Anniversary, Wellness!

SUPPORTING TWCP |
Here are some ways you could help TWCP:
Volunteer Your Time - Our volunteers are invaluable in providing help with office tasks, outreach events, outside work, and maybe in ways that are unique to your skills and availability. Contact JMarston@twcp.org for more information.
Donate Items - We are currently in need of kitchen/cooking supplies for our very successful Cooking for Life series. As you clean out your cupboards at home, think about recycling pots and pans, and utensils in particular. Here is our wish list: mixing bowls, baking sheets, paring knives, stock pots, saucepans, electric fry pan, whisks, towels, oven mitts, colanders, and measuring cups. Contact KNeyer@twcp.org with your donations.
Be an Ambassador - Tell someone about Wellness, invite them to a program or give them a Support Hope packet, which contains information about our programs and services. The packet is an envelope, easy to slip into your pocket or purse, so you have it on hand to give to a person in need. Stop by the receptionist desk to pick up a packet, or contact KNeyer@twcp.org for your very own supply.

Cancer
as a Disease, Not a Death Sentence
The New York
Times
By Jane E.
Brody - June 17, 2008
To see Barry Cooper working
out at the Y.M.C.A. in Brooklyn every morning before
going to work as a patent lawyer, you would be unlikely
to guess that he has cancer. Mr. Cooper, 63 and a grandfather
of two, is one of a small but growing number of patients
for whom once-fatal cancer has become a chronic disease.

Most Cancer Doctors Avoid
Saying It’s the End
The Associated

By Marilyn Marchione

One look at Eileen Mulligan lying
soberly on the exam table and Dr. John Marshall knew
the time for the Big Talk had arrived. He began gently.
The chemotherapy is not helping. The cancer is advanced.
There are no good options left to try. It would be good
to look into hospice care. "At first I was really shocked.
But after, I thought it was a really good way of handling
a situation like that," said Mulligan, who now is making
a "bucket list" — things to do before she dies.

Breast Cancer Vaccines Look
Promising
The Washington
Post
By Kathleen
Doheny - June 26, 2008
Women with
metastatic breast cancer who developed an immune response
to an investigational vaccine lived twice as long as
those who didn't have an immune response, new research
shows. "If you were an immune responder, you had double
the survival of a non-responder," said study author
Dr. Susan Domchek, an associate professor of medicine
at the University of Pennsylvania.
